Each summer of my youth my family made a yearly trip to New Mexico. We loved it but not for its UFO sitings instead we loved the peacefulness and spirituality of the beautiful country that seemed particularly blessed by the gods. One summer we visited the Very Large Array which is a field of twenty-seven satellite dishes pointing towards the heavens, listening for extraterrestrial radio frequencies.
The Very Large Array is quite impressive with numerous enormous satellite dishes hardly like anything you’d put on the side of your house for cable. They seemed like odd creatures in the desert surrounding of New Mexico. My mother, father and I walked around out in the field after seeing a short exhibit and video back at the main building. My mother, a religious individual saw things very concretely, no ghosts, no aliens. She did of course enjoy the occasional science fiction story but that is all. We were walking around the field of satellite dishes in quiet contemplation when suddenly my mother stops, looking up at one of the dishes she states very matter of fact, “They’ve been here!” My father and I were surprised by this response which from Mom seemed a bit unsettling.
I thought no more about this incident at the Very Large Array but that night as we traveled over the mountainous area of Northern New Mexico around the Sangre De Cristo mountains off in the distance I saw a beam of light that seemed otherworldly. It seemed to bend around the mesas defying the laws of physics. I felt excited by the prospect of extraterrestrials. “Could it be?” I wouldn’t blame them for coming to New Mexico as it it one of the most beautiful places on earth. Magical things tend to happen in the Land of Enchantment. If I could believe in extraterrestrials, I would believe they’d come to a place like New Mexico. As for the magic, one night in Taos while I fell asleep, I thought I heard off in the distance a lone flute player playing his eerily supernatural flute and I drifted off under the illusion of Kookipeli giving us the best of the mystery of this ancient land. It is true that strange things happen in New Mexico. Perhaps, the visitors from other planets have indeed as my mother stated, “Been here!”
